My dear Colleague,
After the end of a rather stormy period and the recovery, more or less, of the domestic patients,1 I take advantage of a peaceful Sunday to answer your letter of 29 January.
The news that you are satisfied with the beginnings of your practice came as no surprise to me, but was as gratifying as the confirmation of a conviction always is. I look forward with pleasure to seeing you again in Salzburg. I am naturally in full agreement with your intention to put the libido in the foreground. I have not received the Juliusburger review, resp. the paper itself, and I shall be glad if you will get him to send it to me.
As for the question of the reducibility of anxiety in anxiety neurosis, you will find full information in Stekel's new book on anxiety hysteria2 (to be expected in April). I would still regard the old position as theoretically unassailable, but I see that pure cases of anxiety neurosis are great rarities and perhaps once again only abstractions, and that the not really typical phobias permit and call for a ψ analytic resolution. That there is always also a bit of hysteria is just the way things are. In practice what happens is that actual therapy is first attempted,3 and then, what turns out to be resistant, is tackled with Ψ therapy. Forming one's own opinion experimentally is certainly justified in every case. True, when the actual therapy is omitted or cannot be undertaken, one finds that the emptied forms are again and again filled afresh, so that one never comes to an end.
The new scientific project you mention makes me very curious. Will it be ready to be discussed in Salzburg?
The series in which the study of Gradiva appeared (Vol. 2, Riklin,4 Fairy-tales, Vol. 3, Jung, Content of the Psychoses)—in which we should be very glad to publish something by you sometime—is now published by F. Deuticke.5 My little paper from the new Zeitschrift für Sexualwissenschaft6 must have reached you by now.
