Dear Colleague,
I was very glad to read a letter from you after a longish interval. Then the reply was delayed by all sorts of disturbances, such as conjunctivitis and my daughter's falling ill again, which led to an operation, but hopefully also to a final recovery. She is already doing very well.1
First of all, let me say that everything you tell me in confidence will be treated confidentially, personalia in particular. I willingly grant you the preponderance of the Zurich school, to which, after all, you belong yourself. I would like to make the same comments as you did on the problems that Jung dealt with. Up to now, I have believed the parent of the same sex to be more important for the person concerned, but can also adapt to greater individual variations. Jung has taken a part out of the whole, but he has done so very effectively.
My trip to America starts on 21 August from Trieste, only the return journey will be by way of Hamburg and Berlin and will bring about a brief reunion with you. There is really nothing to be done with the Berliners if they are not annoyed even by this.
As for visitors, we had Jung and his wife here at the end of March2 and Dr Pfister3 during these last few days. Half an hour before him Moll was here, with whom things ended badly. It came to harsh words, and he left suddenly, with a great deal of rapidly secreted venom. I almost had the impression that he thought he was patronizing us, and at that I let myself go a little. Probably you will now feel the repercussions. Never mind.
I should now prepare the third edition of the Everyday Life,4 but because of the pressure of medical work cannot get round to anything. Also, my health has left something to be desired during these past few months. Perhaps it is a good thing if you young people take good care of the cause.—Rank's paper will have been of special interest to you because of its mythological content, and I would like to hear your comments.
