Hamburg
22 September 1914
Dear Friend,
Thank you very much indeed for the preparations you are making for my second stay in Berlin, in particular for those aimed against England. Having regard to them, I propose to leave here early on Friday and to arrive in Berlin at 1.10, where I can stay until six in the evening. The time is perhaps too short for a meeting of the group, should rather be saved for our being together, if you can manage it.
I hope I shall still be in time to forward to Rank the manifesto you sent,1 which pleased us very much.
This is not the first time I have been in Hamburg, but it is the first time I have been here not as in a strange town. I live with my children, talk about the success of “our” loan,2 and discuss the chances of “our” battle of millions, with a faint memory of discussions about an earlier gigantic battle, which, after some partial successes, ended quite drearily.
