Berlin W. 15, Rankestrasse 24
15 December 1914
Dear Professor,
Yesterday I got up for the first time after being ill in bed for a week, and was gladdened on this occasion by your letter. My trouble was the same as is reigning in your house, too. I have already had a great deal of experience of influenza, but I have never yet gone through such a bad infection as this. Today I am trying to work a little again, but it does not quite work yet. I hope yours are all well again, and you yourself have again overcome the intestinal attack!
I also think that we cannot demand that Heller publish the journals, should he refuse. He is taking over a considerable risk. Apart from the fact that a number of buyers (the Swiss) are falling off, and there is now no replacement for them, he cannot send to England and get money from there. Quite a number of members from the Berlin group are away, and it will be difficult to get the money also from them. We can of course hope that peace will come in the course of time, but when?—We are short of contributions, so it is all the more correct to let the journals lapse for now.
I should like to suggest the following: we could prepare the 1914 yearly report now for the 1915 Jahrbuch. It is true that some co-workers who helped last year are missing, but the report will make much less work and can be done with rather fewer workers. We could also collect the original writings produced in the course of the next few months. In these times, when everything is absorbed by the war, there is no doubt that only the narrowest circle of our collaborators—naturally, also the most reliable—will contribute something. A survey of the products of this circle could easily be acquired. A good Jahrbuch 1915 could be put together out of this, and it would then be our only organ for this year. It could be edited jointly by Ferenczi, Rank, Sachs, Hitschmann, Jones, and myself (with you as chief editor, of course). The printing could be done by the sheet during the war
