30 December 1914
Dear Friend,
I am very sorry to hear that you are not yet well and that your wife is now ill too. These are times in which one should at least be in good health. Our domestic epidemic has come to an end, but Ernst is in bed in Klagenfurt with severe tonsillitis, from which, no doubt, he will recover only slowly. One can naturally do nothing for him. According to his letter today, he is back in barracks, though feverish.
I have always hated helplessness and penury most of all, and I am afraid we are now approaching both.
Deuticke has told me that he does not want to publish the Jahrbuch in 1915, as he has not yet been able to distribute the 1914 edition. He says that everything is bolted, and quotes the example of renowned German publishers who in many cases have ceased their business entirely for the duration of the war. I suspected something of the sort when I read of your intentions in your last letter but one.
We have not yet heard from Heller, but have nothing different to expect.
