Dear Professor,
I owe you a reply to your letter of the 8th inst. and to an enquiry in the circular letter. I am glad to take advantage of the quiet of the Christmas days to tell you the necessary things and some others.
So first of all to the question of the membership of our Society! I enclose two copies of the latest edition of our statutes; § 5 and 6 contain the relevant regulations. I should like to emphasize that we have fairly strict conditions for the admission of extraordinary members; however, the paragraphs are couched in such a way as to allow exceptions everywhere, if special cases really arise. If someone has proved his worth as an extraordinary member, there are absolutely no difficulties in the way of his election as an ordinary member. At the general meeting in January we shall, for example, elect several extraordinary members as ordinary members without them, themselves, having made an application. In general I can already say now that we shall express ourselves in a completely conciliatory way, but with a certain reticence that the circumstances appear to demand. I may add personally that from the bottom of my heart I wish for you to have a satisfactory solution to the whole business for the New Year.
The question of the female leading zones that I hinted on in my last letter is far from ready to be incorporated into our
