The present edition is as complete as possible. All letters, postcards, telegrams, notes, and enclosures that have been preserved and could be found are reprinted without omissions or pseudonyms. It is a new edition in that the transcription, translation, and footnotes that appeared in the abbreviated publication of 1965 have all been replaced (see Preface).
The project was accomplished in several stages. First, I made a transcription, based on a microfilm of the German originals. Second, a translation into English was made (see Translator's Note). Third, editorial footnotes were added. My guiding line was to give the contemporary reader information about anything with which she or he might not be familiar: persons, events, literary and scientific works, quotations, cryptoquotations, allusions, and so on. Such annotation can only be an approximation: the specialist, on the one hand, might find some notes superfluous or redundant, where another reader, on the other, might want more information on some points.
Some minor changes were made to facilitate readability and understanding: titles of books and journals, abbreviated expressions, and words—like Freud's “u” and Abraham's “&” for “and”—were usually spelled out. Some characteristic abbreviations, however, such as the Greek letters Ψα for psychoanalysis, or Ucs. for unconscious, have been left intact. Dates at the head of letters and the letterheads have been standardized. Words that the writers of the letters had underlined have been reproduced in italics, as have terms that remain in German or in other foreign languages. Anything added to the original text appears in square brackets.
