Since its creation in 2001 up to 2008, the PIEE has registered 143 training analysis projects. 53 of them were regular training analysis with local IPA members, authorized to analyse the candidates in their towns. 18 PIEE analysands have chosen exile in order to be analysed. Shuttle analysis, since its acceptance by the IPA as a method of training, is midway between these two solutions. It gives an analysand the opportunity to have training analysis abroad when there is no local training analyst, without enduring the miseries of emigration. 90 PIEE analysands have chosen shuttle analysis for their analytic training.
To be registered as a ‘PIEE analysand’, a person has first to fill in a registration form and, since 2008, to write a letter of motivation, explaining his or her reasons to wish to become a psychoanalyst, and how he intends to have a training analysis. The PIEE Board makes a first selection on the basis of this registration form and this motivation letter. If the applicant is successful in this first stage, he has two interviews with PIEE Training Committee members, usually during one of the Schools organized by the PIEE, about the applicant's analysability, the feasibility of the plan for the analysis, and the analysand's ability to face the specific stresses of shuttle analysis. Both interviewers report back to the PIEE Training Committee who takes the final decision of registration: refusal, delay or acceptance.
The PIEE area includes all states formerly in the USSR and East European countries in which there is no IPA Study Group or Society (Bulgaria, Croatia and Slovenia).
42 shuttle analysands come from Russia, including 27 from Moscow, to which we have to add 14 applicants for regular analysis (non-shuttle) and seven who have had analysis in exile. The PIEE had registered 48 Moscow analysands before the Moscow group applied to become an IPA Study
