Victims of child abuse manifest symptoms related to the weakness of their protective shield. This article examines how a psychoanalytic approach using fairy tales and play in a child’s therapy group can lead to the restoration of a containing space and a protective shield and can help to reinstate a space for illusion and fantasy. Two sessions of a fairy tale therapeutic group are described in detail, showing how a psychoanalytic approach is crucial to the development of psychic care. Treatment using fairy tales offers the children the possibility of feeling protected and of imagining a positive alternative rather than having to repeat previous patterns of violence.
