Summary: The article retraces the history of the terms »object representation« and »self representation«. The former was introduced in 1926 by Fenichel, in the wake of Radó, in order to come to a metapsychological understanding of identification and of the superego. As to the term »self representation«, Hartmann was the first to use it in a publication, but in fact it played a much greater role in the work of Edith Jacobson who occasionally maintained that she had originally coined it. Both terms reflect the basic shift in psychoanalytic thought triggered by Freud's The Ego and the Id which led to productive theoretical developments at the Berlin Psychoanalytic Institute. Jacobson continued along this line after her emigration to the US.
