Summary: Whom does a woman serve? Joan Riviere as translator between Freud and Jones. The psychoanalyst Joan Riviere (1883-1962), who came from an established family, was one of the first to translate Freud in Britain. After a failed analysis with Ernest Jones, she became Freud's patient in 1922. Freud recognized her talent and entrusted her with translations of his works. Over her head, he negotiated her position as translating editor of the International Journal with Jones and secured her nomination against his resistance. Some examples are given to demonstrate the special quality of Riviere's translations of Freud's writings.
