Summary: »I will stay«. An archive photo of unidentified children instigates various historical and affective associations. The researcher seeks positive identifications and historical certainty: does the picture show Ernst Freud around the age of 12? However, when no certainty can be achieved, one must abandon the quest for truth in favour of a more associative approach. Freud's analyses of memories and dreams serve as a model for integrating products of imagination into an investigative framework. His analogy between the distortion of childhood memories and the development of historiography raises important questions, such as this: should historiography take on the burden of self-analysis and examine its motives and its criteria for selecting and manipulating material?
