Summary: Solving a riddle - on the tracks of a love-story. This article outlines the development of a research project initiated by the discovery of new material: a set of letters, written by Mathilde, Freud's eldest daughter, to Eugen Pachmayr, a doctor's son from Munich. On the face of it, these letters do not actually answer the question whether the two young people were in love. But the answer could be found elsewhere.
