Summary: Winnicott's arabesques. The wit of a psychotherapeutic technique. This article analyzes Winnicott's technique of the so-called »squiggle game«. Its basic principle can be traced back to early attempts in psychiatry at using patients’ drawings and paintings as diagnostic tools around 1900. Winnicott's technique, however, by being rooted in his theory of »transition phemomena«, is conducive to a new relationship between patient and therapist.
