Summary: »… that Jung wrongfully curtailed the presenting time of our paper«. On the genesis and fate of a lost paper of Victor Tausk and Lou Andreas-Salomé. The newly discovered author's abstract of Tausk's article on »narcissism« delivered at the Munich congress in 1913 makes it possible to sketch the central ideas of this lost paper by collecting and connecting further allusions to its subject. Placed in its historical context and illustrated by some unpublished biographical details, a vivid picture is presented of the triangle between Freud, Tausk and Andreas-Salomé. Two facts may be highlighted: Firstly, Tausk's paper was the result of an intensive intellectual exchange with Andreas-Salomé; secondly, Tausk emerges as an important thinker, anticipating and clarifying the special role of »mechanisms of identification« in narcissism, melancholia and schizophrenia. His approach appears as an early conceptualization of ego psychology on a basis of drive dynamics that recognises narcissism, i. e. the state of non-differentiation of body and mind, as the origin of subject formation.
