Summary: The Swiss psychoanalyst Paul Parin. On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his birthday (Sept. 20th, 1916), the paper reconstructs Parin’s way into psychoanalysis and within the psychoanalytic movement. It highlights his medical and psychoanalytic training, his joining the Swiss Society for Psychoanalysis, his ethnopsychoanalytic expeditions (with Goldy Parin-Matthèy and Fritz Morgenthaler) to Africa, his role in founding the Psychoanalytische Seminar Zürich, his work both within the Swiss Society (of which Parin was president from 1967 until 1970) and at the IPA level. Parin failed to prevent the splitting of the Swiss Freudians in 1977. His trademark was the elaboration of Freudian social and cultural criticism - in consequence his clinical and technical significance has faded in the background.
