Summary: »I fear that such statements will move us further apart.« The end of the friendship between Otto Fenichel and Wilhelm Reich in the light of unpublished documents (1933-1934). Wilhelm Reich and Otto Fenichel were the most high-profile members of the »left-wing« psychoanalytical opposition at the beginning of the 1930s. The article draws on unpublished documents highlights their different views and approaches as regards the IPA's strategy of adaptation to the Nazi regime. While Reich prioritized pressing ahead with a socio-critical, antifascist form of psychoanalysis (if necessary, without or against the IPA), Fenichel felt that he could only continue his activities within the association of psychoanalysts. He was therefore prepared to make many more compromises than Reich. This difference lay at the heart of the end of their parting company a little later, as can be inferred from their correspondence as early as 1933. In August 1934, at the IPA Congress in Lucerne, Reich's expulsion from the DPG and IPA, which had taken place behind closed doors in 1933, was made official. Reich did not receive the support he hoped for from Fenichel in the confrontations that then resulted. This brought their friendship and collaboration to an end. Their argument over the mission and social responsibility of psychoanalysis is of topical importance against the backdrop of the current political »shift to the right«.
