Summary: Hans Nathansohn, curative teacher and pioneer of social welfare care. Brother-in-law of Otto Fenichel. The three Nathansohn siblings had close ties to the young left-wing protagonists of the early days of psychoanalysis in Berlin. Hans-Gerhard Nathansohn (1893-1951) was a care-worker who had trained in depth psychology and worked as Departmental head at the Youth Office on Prenzlauer Berg, which for the first time included psychological considerations in its youth care work, something for which it was renowned in Europe. His sister Klara Nathansohn practiced body therapy work, which influenced many young psychoanalysts, and was married to Otto Fenichel. Susanne Nathansohn, a journalist who was active in the German Communist Party's secret service and flat-shared with the Fenichels, was one of the voices in the debates among left-wing psychoanalysts on Marxism and the Soviet Union. The Third Reich destroyed the paths they had taken in life and their friendships, driving all three into exile and to roles in the underground.
