Abstract: Trauma and Disposition in Freud's Case Studies. It is often assumed that Freud abandoned his seduction theory in 1897, i.e., the theory that leads all psychoneuroses back to traumatic sexual experiences in early childhood. From that time onwards Freud is supposed to have focused on the role of oedipal phantasies in the etiology of the neuroses. But does this imply that traumatic experiences now only play a secondary role in his »neurotica«? And if this is not the case, how should we position and evaluate the role of trauma in Freud's theories? In this article, these are the leading questions for a reading of the case studies of Dora, the Rat Man and the Wolf Man. It will be argued, Freud repeatedly reconceptualized his seduction theory in light of clinical problems and notably also in relation to constitutional and dispositional factors. Both constitution and disposition largely result from traumatic experiences in the evolution of species and cultural history.
