The paper discusses certain problems in using case histories and correspondence of therapists in public archives. Some examples from the Tübingen archives of the Binswanger Clinic in Kreuzlingen, from the Archiv zur Geschichte der Psychoanalyse in Koblenz and from Freud letters containing patient names are adduced to highlight the existing stipulations of German archive law and archive user regulations. The interests of the researcher dealing with the history of psychoanalysis and consideration of the justified interests of privacy-protection for all persons concerned must always be carefully weighed against each other. Should patient data be kept secret forever or just for a certain time? Absolute secrecy could only be achieved by destroying the documents.
