It is little known that Freud was a connoisseur and admirer of Dante and that the afterlife journey, especially the descent into hell of Dante and Virgil, played a not insignificant role in the creation of the Interpretation of Dreams, which already refers to hell in its motto (Acheronta movebo!). As a 20-year-old student, Freud bought a copy of the Divine Comedy in Italian in Trieste; 62 years later, in 1938, a niece gave him a two-volume German edition. Thus the work accompanied him throughout his life. Dante's journey through the inferno became a metaphor for the difficult breakthrough of psychoanalysis and for Freud's self-analysis, as documented by the correspondence with Wilhelm Fliess, to whom Freud assigned a similar role as a companion to that played by Virgil with Dante. As an analyst, Freud himself later

explicitly assumed this function towards his patients. There are several quotations of or references to Dante in his writings, which are traced and explained in this paper.
