On the role of gossip in research into Freud's biography
This article deals with the significance of gossip for the biography of Freud. Kurt R. Eissler – the first Freud biographer who no longer knew Sigmund Freud personally – repeatedly emphasized the importance of gossip to his interviewees, in the interviews conducted by him on behalf of the Sigmund Freud Archives since 1951. Examples are used to illustrate that the investigation of even seemingly absurd claims and rumors can lead to secondary results that bring the unexpected to light.
