The indologist Ignaz Schoenberg and his friendship with Sigmund Freud
The early deceased indologist Ignaz Schoenberg was a close friend of Sigmund Freud in the years 1882 to 1886. He was engaged to Minna Bernays, the younger sister of Freud's bride Martha. Schoenberg helped Freud in a difficult situation regarding his relation to Martha, and in a matter concerning his friend, Freud talked to Georg Bühler, the supervisor of Schoenberg's doctoral thesis. More than a year, until the middle of June 1885, Schoenberg was assistant to Monier-Williams in Oxford for the revised edition of the Sanskrit English Dictionary. The last years of Schoenberg's life, at the same time decisive years in the career of Freud, were overshadowed by increasing impairment of his physical and mental condition due to tuberculosis. The presentation is mainly based on the correspondence of Freud with his future sister in law and his bride.
