This paper describes an organisational intervention in a unit which treats and secures dangerous people. It shows how the overt competition between the custodial, rehabilitation and medical treatment tasks can collude to avoid the primary risk of the enterprise in providing for the physical and mental health and safety of the staff.
In describing the avoidance of thinking and the attacks on linking, the paper explores the group dynamic of incohesion and illustrates it from events within the consultancy. A key focus is upon the dynamics of re-cycled trauma that is imported into the system to be managed for each patient. Supervision is explored as a means of providing the training and authorisation to address the real risks to staff and patients alike.
