This paper presents first of all several key conceptions of anxiety and its place in human life in general. It then goes on to catalogue many of the various and myriad forms which anxiety takes in organisational life in particular. Thirdly, the attitudes and conceptual positions of four internationally renowned consultants are presented in order to compare and contrast their very different views of how consultants deal with anxiety and its derivatives in their practical work. Finally, with the help of Wilfred R. Bion's Container-Contained model, the author presents an example from his own consultation work in which he demonstrates the use of systems-psychodynamic thinking and the application of certain ideas and techniques derived from the Tavistock group relations approach in attempting to deal with problems of anxiety in the management team of a large German industrial firm.
