In this paper a system psychodynamic perspective of the late twentieth and early twenty-first century world is tentatively mapped out by proposing a four-cell matrix constructed from two axes: power and vulnerability crossed with Eros and Thanatos. This matrix offers an opportunity to examine afresh global political and social processes. These processes influence our contemporary daily reality and are both troubling due to the exponential growth of terrorism, as well as hopeful due to an increase in mobilisation of public opinion. The authors examine each cell and its interdependency within the matrix while attempting to describe the current state of our world, inviting the reader to engage with these issues.
