As this issue of Organisational and Social Dynamics was going to press, we learned of the passing of a dear colleague, David Armstrong. A long-time member of the Tavistock Institute, Tavistock Consultancy, the Grubb Institute, OPUS, and ISPSO, amongst others, David was known as a luminary in the field of group relations, systems psychodynamics, socioanalysis, and organisational consultancy. He was also an innovative early contributor to the nascent field and method of social dreaming.
As tributes have poured in, colleagues describe David as brilliant, thoughtful, and a warm and generous colleague, both in practice and in supervision. He had a gift for exploring organisations beneath the surface, applying psychoanalytic theory, working with social defences, discovering and revealing meaning, and his signature concept of the “organization-in-the-mind” illuminated in his book of that title. The Tavistock Institute remembered him as “thoughtful, precise, imaginative and witty—and always in service of the task and the development of others”.
As editors of this journal, dedicated to the pursuit and expansion of knowledge in these vital areas, we mourn his loss as a pioneer in our field. A more comprehensive obituary will follow in a future issue of the journal.
