The Editor of the long-awaited 2024 Revised Standard Edition of the Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud (RSE) reflects on the process of adding a new layer of corrections, editorial commentaries, and translations to Freud’s complete works. In Solms’s introduction to his “Notes on the Translations” in volume 24 of the RSE—published here in an updated form—he outlines how the revision incorporated decades of scholarly deliberation regarding the translation of Freudian technical terms while attempting to retain the best of Strachey’s original English translation. It is included in a special issue of Psychoanalytic Perspectives devoted to the interwoven themes of translation and psychoanalysis.
