We have conceptualized the development of object relationships in terms of the gradual establishment of perceptual object constancy together with the gradual establishment of the libidinal tie to the primary object. These permit, in turn, the move away from the stage of the need-satisfying relationship, and form the foundation for the development of the capacity for constant relationships. Within such constant relationships drive investment in, and affect relatedness to, the object representation are of prime importance. We have further differentiated between the tie to the primary libidinal object and subsequent ties to love objects.
