The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the importance of prospective fatherhood as a period of critical developmental changes in young male adults. It is also a significant phase of preparation for parenting and fathering. Selected aspects of the analysis of a young adult, whose wife was impregnated and gave birth during the analysis, were reviewed. Major upheavals occurred around the impregnation and conception and the unfolding stages of the pregnancy. In part these were reactions to the events of the pregnancy; in part they reflected significant events in the patient's early life, including the mother's pregnancy when the patient was quite young, and infantile reactions to and explanations of the birth. There was a reworking of relationships to parental figures, siblings, and wife, in which the current realities and the transference to the analyst synergically influenced one another.
