A child analytic case is presented in which the analytic as well as extra-analytic events leading to the establishment of a therapeutic alliance are described. The clinical data suggest that the differentiation of alliance from positive transference and of alliance from compliance are difficult to make. In both instances, the latter may be a prelude to the former.
The suggestion is offered that therapeutic alliance may be best understood as a concept defined by its functions. The case discussion is restricted to the value of communicable speech for developing a satisfactory analytic treatment.
