In conclusion I particularly want to reemphasize some of the differences between the work of analyzing the conflicts of the infantile neurosis—the dangers arising from libidinal and aggressive oedipal drives, regressive defenses, and compromise formations—and the psychic work performed in the analysis of the self—the establishment, interpretation, and working through of self-object transferences and the transmuting internalization of the new psychic structure which eventually makes the transference "pass" (Tolpin, 1971):
1For patients with structural deficits, genetic reconstructions and interpretations of conflicts are ineffectual because these interpretations bypass and obscure the central psychopathology; and they inadvertently repeat childhood psychological injuries which lead to artifacts and regressive transferences.
