We deeply mourn the death of our beloved friend and colleague Marianne Kris, who was an editor of The Psychoanalytic Study of the Child since 1958. One of our future volumes will be dedicated to her.
The following three tributes were read at a memorial meeting held in New York on December 7, 1980.
We have gathered together to honor and to say good-bye to Marianne Kris whose influence remains an abiding presence for each of us. As a mother, grandmother, friend, colleague, physician, psychoanalyst, teacher, and scholar she has left with us a rich and enduring legacy. By the way she lived her life and through the vital balance of human warmth, optimism, and searching intelligence that she gave to each of her relationships, she has made available loving and guiding resources that nurture and inspire us. This was her gift, an immortality that is available but not imposed, one that liberates and does not burden.
Marianne Kris was born in Vienna on May 27, 1900. A graduate of the University of Vienna, she had a close association with medicine and psychoanalysis from the days of her childhood in Vienna. Her father, a pediatrician, was a close friend and collaborator of Sigmund Freud. Dr. Oskar Rie was the pediatrician for the Freud children and had been an associate of Freud's in an outpatient neurology clinic for children. Dr. Rie also participated in the weekly Tarock card game.
