This clinical paper has presented a focus on mother as patient. I described therapies which seemed to proceed, in part, through the transitional object the baby. This is probably only one form of a general negotiation which occurs between every patient and therapist. There are many transitional objects and phenomena—be they words; significant or symbolic memories shared; or the very room, regularity, and arrangement of the treatment. The mother-patients described, who are involved in the primordial mother-infant relationships at the time of therapy, give us a special window into both parenthood and psychotherapy as developmental stages.
