OVER A PERIOD OF SEVERAL YEARS, MARIANNE KRIS AND I spent many hours discussing this case and preparing it for possible publication. From that document which covered the first 3 years of a child's life, this report of the first 15 months has been condensed for presentation. The ideas presented reflect Marianne Kris's thinking as much as my own. The story of Anne, a normal infant at birth, is one of an infant struggling against deprivation and trauma resulting principally from problems in the mother-child relationship. This is the same child about whom Ernst Kris wrote the paper, unfinished at his death and later published under the title, "Decline and Recovery in the Life of a Three-Year-Old" (1962). In several other papers, too, aspects of the development of this child have been described (Coleman et al., 1953); (Provence, 1965). Anne educated the Yale Child Study Center research group in memorable ways: she and her mother captured our sympathy, challenged and in some respects frustrated us as clinicians, and presented us with issues and opportunities for thinking, speculating, and examining psychoanalytic propositions which have had an enduring influence.
