The paper examined the psychoanalytic theory of love, the psychoanalytic theory of transference neurosis, and the concept of resolution of the transference insofar as they are relevant to the process of termination. "Resolution of the transference" is defensive in nature and no longer corresponds to the current psychoanalytic object relations theory, nor has it been confirmed by clinical data. Current psychoanalytic techniques typically lead to the analyst becoming a significant reliable object of the analysand. This fact makes resolution of the transference questionable. Internalization and identification with the analyst, though important, cannot carry the full burden of termination. Because the analyst remains important even after the analysis, ways must be sought to facilitate transference from the analyst to objects in the real world. Some difficulties in achieving this goal have been discussed.
