This paper outlines the role of development assistance as a therapeutic measure within the normal psychoanalytic technique. Freud's definition of assistance “that the analyst gives the patient … the conscious anticipatory idea to grasp the unconscious material.” This proposal is elaborated in the context of developmental differentiation and regression.
