In the early days of child psychoanalysis, there was a keen interest and lively participation in the education of young children on the part of child psychoanalysts. Such a partnership existed in the rich history of the Anna Freud Hampstead Child Therapy Clinic. Following in this tradition, some schools have, to this day, benefited greatly from the help provided by child analysts, who have helped teachers and administrators better understand children’s inner lives and the possible meanings of their behavior. The following description, written from the point of view of the school, is a personal account of the psychoanalytic consultations started in one small school in Dallas, Texas, and how those consultations became established until they became part of the “fabric” of the school.
