Drawn from the American Psychoanalytic Association’s Discussion Group, “Enriching Adult Analytic Work by Child Analytic Training and Practice,” co-founded by Caroline Sehon and Virginia Ungar , this six-paper collection investigates the factors in child analytic training that potentiate analysts’ effectiveness with adult patients. The authors illuminate how the nuanced perspectives and techniques honed in child analysis (e.g. attunement to nonverbal communication, containment) enrich analysts’ understanding and treatment of adults. Vignettes, interwoven with insightful discussions and references to child analytic literature, provide fertile ground for contemplating the contributions of child analysis to adult analytic theory and technique. This collection of papers underscores the interconnectedness of child and adult analytic work, emphasizing the centrality of developmental understanding in enhancing clinical practice and promoting the integration of these perspectives for the benefit of all patients.
