Child psychoanalysts from the Hanna Perkins Center in Cleveland, Ohio have provided consultation services to the directors and staff at preschools and childcare centers of the Greater Cleveland area since the 1950s. Beginning in 1993, the Early Childhood Intervention Alliance (ECIA), a 10-year program funded by a corporate foundation, provided support to develop and implement what came to be known as the “Hanna Perkins Center/National Child Care Consultation Alliance” (HPC/NCCCA). The project made possible the training and supervision of mental health professionals at five childcare center sites in cities across the United States. During the 12-year span of this initiative the consultation that was provided and the research that was conducted led to the articulation of the model and the demonstration of its efficacy. Current literature and research have continued to emphasize the value of providing Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (IECMHC) that results in positive effects on teacher attitudes, children’s behavior, and classroom management. Buoyed by a deep understanding of psychoanalytic early childhood development and clinical techniques that use relationships to promote the development of capacity and agency in parents and adults working with children, this form of consultation provides a model for child analysts working in their communities that continues to be supported by contemporary research and literature.
