This paper highlights an unconscious fantasy that the author has observed in several autistic children as well as in neurotic adult patients – the scene of having a multitude of identical versions of oneself. The paper connects this fantasy to concerns that come up in film and literature, in popular culture, and around some of the anxieties caused by the advent of artificial intelligence (AI). The paper discusses some etiological factors in this fantasy, as well as some of its implications for psychoanalytic treatment.
