Based on an examination of Psychoanalysis and History, an English journal devoted to the history of psychoanalysis, the author presents part of the work of its principal director, John Forrester , a historian and philosopher of science from the University of Cambridge, who is not well known in France. The author links the work of this researcher with that of the new history of science. The latter, originating in Anglo-Saxon countries, has renewed itself by abandoning great syntheses in order to focus instead on scientific work “as it is done”, proceeding by “case studies”, according to a method akin to that of Carlo Ginzburg's micro-history. John Forrester's research and many articles in the journal aim to include the history of psychoanalysis within this same movement, with the background idea that psychoanalysis plays a major role in this evolution.
