Freud attributes an important role to the confrontation between the child's psyche and that of his parents. He maintained this vertex from the Project up until the introduction of primary masochism, including the “double drive reversal”. Primary masochism is not a given; sometimes it is not organised in a valid way. An element of defusion originating in the parental psyche is necessary to activate the child's thought-processes with the goal of organizing and giving meaning to the massive influx of excitations and stimulations of the postpartum period. The capacity to negativize the living is indispensable: imagine what life would be like in an environment constantly on the verge of becoming animated! Autistic thought, with its tendency to devitalize the living can be a result of this. The primitive interplay of forces between the emerging psyche of the child and that of his parents determines the access to a world whose objects are no longer the creation of the child's psyche alone. They can be tolerated, however, in spite of the fact that they are animated by their own desire.
