The criteria for terminating an analysis have evolved: today we are more interested in the transformations of psychic functioning than in the analysis of “complexes”. The analysis is terminable, whereas the psychoanalytic process is interminable. Renunciation of the transference object is a necessary process prior to the end of the analysis. The aptitude for displacement is a precondition for this: a transference displacement permitting the incarnation of oedipal love objects during the analysis and a further displacement in order to separate from them and renounce them. The work of mourning primary objects is the heart of analysis; the work of renunciation of the analyst the lever of its termination. Renunciation requires psychic work involving the displacement of cathexes, desexualization, sublimation and identification. A fragment from the end of an analysis illustrates the work of renunciation sustained by recourse to the cultural register opening on to a sort of resolution of the Oedipus complex retrospectively.
