What will remain, after the analysis, of the work carried out together for many years? If the end requires renunciations, for analyst and analysand alike, it also provides narcissistic compensations in reality, the reflection of possible displacements in both partners of the treatment. However, the question of hate and of the negative transference will be discussed in relation to Julie's acting out at the end of the analysis and, in the light of André Green's work on the constitution of the structuring figure of the mother, the following hypothesis will be put forward. In order for a structuring matrix to be constituted or reinforced, when the subject has not been able or has only been able partially to have access to the negative hallucination of the maternal object, reflecting the failures of primary repression, it may sometimes be important that the analyst is no longer there. Countertransference difficulties, and the need to analyse them painstakingly in these instances, even more than in others, will also be discussed.
