For 1/25th of a second Freud's granddaughter Eva held the camera's attention. That split-second stands in for a brief lifetime, radiating from the photograph as we view it. As we attempt to reconstruct her biography through this image, the child's direct gaze draws us into her world, both at that moment and at various other critical instants of her life. Her questioning eye forcefully establishes her identity and at the same time challenges our desire to understand her experience. This type of phenomenological historiography is by its nature tentative and fragmented. It is an adjunct to the neo-orphic project of photography - to reclaim doomed mortals from the underworld and bring them into the light.
