The analytic treatment of M., who came for analysis following two severe somatizations, seems exemplary of the work of re-fusion subsequent to drive de-fusion. This work is made possible by eliciting an element of masochism guardian of life (Rosenberg, 1992). Thus, the death drive does not involve the same degree of destructivity depending on whether or not it is linked to the libido or the life drive. The emergence of a somatization offers a possibility here of constituting an object to fight against, a precarious object that does not survive recovery. So, fighting… in order that the death drive—the last bulwark against death itself ?—if it doesn't help one to live, can at least make way to an impulse for living, even if masochistically.
