How does one make a cinema film out of 300 hours of interviews ? How does one make nothingness speak? How does one render the unimaginable imaginable? How does one make the past present? How does one facilitate the identification of the spectators with the victims? How does one resist one's own emotions? Two years after the film Shoah by Claude Lanzmann was released in August 1987, the head film editor Ziva Postec reflects on the work that she carried out for almost six years.
The interview that follows her text gives another measure of this harrowing but vital experience for the author, suggests a certain proximity with the analytic method, looks back on her professional journey since Pourquoi Israël by Lanzmann in 1972 and opens out onto her other work including the co-production and montage in 2018 of Israël, le voyage interdit de Jean-Pierre Lledo.
