“Affect” is drive movement in relation to the object and narcissism. Distinct from representation, it has a signifying function (first topography); the lack of distinction between affect and representation (second topography) requires a psychic work to gain access to meaning. Thirty years later (1999) André Green showed that, in its different forms, affect serves the emergence of an intermediary area that is missing in non-neurotic structures. He taught contemporary clinical thinking with passion.
