Among the anticipatory ideas that govern the beginning of an analysis, acquiring a “bit more freedom”, condenses the essence of its aims: to be freed from one’s symptoms and one’s impediments, to desire, love and work, but also to be able to separate and live in the independence, albeit relative, of one’s thoughts and acts. An ideal thus emerges which, the author suggests, ascribes the ego and psychic functioning a status of subject in their own right, if we mean by that the capacity to become the author of one’s own life. And yet, these conscious hopes are opposed by the antagonistic forces of repetition-compulsion, masochism and self-destruction, that is, the refusal to get better: a scandalous refusal which means that unpleasure, suffering and pain take over the transference and colonize the resistances to fight against the dangers of freedom.
